Gifting As The Pinterest Woman

WOW, what a week! This Christmas was absolutely wonderful – I had a TON of extended and immediate family time, loads of auntie time with the cutest little nephew a woman could have (and there is still more to come!) and nommmmmmmed on some of my FAVORITE treats, meals and snacks…I’m left feeling loved, content and FULL! 😉 Unfortunately while prepping for the holidays with a few The Pinterest Woman (TPW) recipes, I cooked my phone…whoops…so I lost a ton of photos that I hoped to blog about this week…so come with me on this journey and please excuse me for not having step by step photos!

As for this post, I want to focus on GIFT GIVING!

Gift giving was so much fun this year…not only was I more confident in purchasing gifts for people, I also had a nice time scanning Pinterest Wishlists for a few surprise gifts for people. I also received a few gifts off of my own wishlist – that was pretty cool ;-). Makes you realize who actually visits your boards! ha! As for being more confident in my purchasing of gifts, I always stress out when I need to purchase someone clothes. It is tough to know what is someone’s style when maybe it isn’t your style. As you may remember from my shopping posts with Carrie and Charlotte, Carrie LOVES to redo her look. SO, I had so much fun shopping for her gift this year.

Knowing she is a fan of AnnTaylor LOFT AND that she has loads of pants which she purchased during our most recent holiday trip, I headed to the LOFT for top options! Carrie also loves advice on how to put things together, but since my own personal style needs Pinterest, I figured, I’d pin a few ideas for her and put it with her gift…enter REAL LIFE PINNING!

Through Microsoft Paint, I made three TIP pages of the same size and put together a little three page book (sorry, I lost the final photo in the accidental cooking of my phone)

Through Microsoft Paint, I made three TIP pages of the same size and put together a little three page book (sorry, I lost the final photo in the accidental cooking of my phone)

I purchased the maroon sweater with a dark pink top (see top right photo) and gold and purple bracelet set. I then snapped a few shots of the sweater on display in store AND pinned a photo of the top online – with a few additional tips for how to pair the coordinating top with her cute new pants, this gift was a HUGE hit! While I don’t recommend gifting clothes with tips on how to wear it for everyone, it is a fun way to gift someone clothes who ASKS for the advice or tips ;-).

HAPPY DRESSING…and gifting dear readers!

The Darcy Family Grew by One Today: Newborn Gift Ideas

That’s right, my sister and brother in law welcomed a baby girl this morning at 5:05am CST – 8lbs, 4oz. She is gorgeous and I cannot wait to meet her!

Out of habit, I went to Pinterest to see if I could find unique “birth” day gift ideas beyond the clothes and other lil things I’ve already purchased for her. I, of course, found a few I HAD to share!

Look at these ADORABLE burlap pillows from Etsy, personalized with the baby’s name:  My girlfriend gifted Mr. Darcy and I with a sign when we were married that read “The Darcys est. 2010.” I think it is so cute and a fun play on words. Why not a pillow?! Plus, this pillow would look cute in my in-laws home! I may need to get one to match for my nephew so they can place on both sides of the couch ;-).

Baby Girl Darcy – est. 2012

DIY Growth Chart – I don’t know about you, BUT I LOVE a growth chart. My parents had one for my brother when he was little and my sister started tracking our growth on the edge of her door when we were a bit older. It is funny looking back. This blogger shows you step by step tips for creating your own chart here.  OR you could just buy it here.

Such a cute growth chart! I also love the one going around Pinterest now that takes a 2×4 piece of wood and is painted to look like a ruler…so cute! This one is a bit easier to ship ;-).

Teddy Bear – In my opinion, no matter what the sex of the baby, you really can’t go wrong with an adorable teddy bear. Etsy has some INCREDIBLE homemade bears – I especially love the little crochet bears  – but any soft bear would work. Look at all of the Teddy Bear inspiration that pops up when you Pin the term “Teddy Bear”:

I am so overjoyed. Congrats to the entire Darcy family! Welcome to the world baby girl Darcy. We love you so much.

XOXO, Karen

Not that I would EVER compare my dog to my niece, but I thought you might enjoy a “baby” photo and since I don’t have permission to share Baby Girl Darcy’s photo, I thought I’d share Harper’s newborn photo!

PINTEREST: The Reverse of “I Have Nothing To Wear” – A Workweek’s Worth Of Pinned Outfits

This post officially marks my 100th!!! Although I typically just blog as I go (I really wasn’t lying when I said I use Pinterest EVERY day), when I started seeing the numbers grow closer to 100 this past weekend, I decided to give some thought to what I wanted my 100th post to be. Through these last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my take on and experiences with Pinterest Pins. I hope you’ve:

  • Laughed with me as I learn how to cook – typically it takes me a day or two to find the funny there, but you help me uncover it when I actually have to write out what I just discovered (BACON GREASE UNDER A BROILER = FIRE!)
  • Celebrated when I actually got a recipe right
  • Cheered as our boys in orange went to the World Series!!!
  • Whipped up some margaritas before, during and after my 30th birthday Fiesta (THANK YOU for indulging me)!
  • OR, embraced a girls night full of girlie movies! I look forward to sharing more of my favorites (up next, holiday movies!!!)

Although I definitely need to take better photos (poor Mr. Darcy’s crema never looked so unappetizing), you have all been so fabulous to me and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing many things with you. SO, for my 100th post, I decided I’d go with a post about one of my more popular Pinterest boards – also a popular theme here at The Pinterest Woman – FASHION!

It was either fashion or food!

Those are the posts I get the most “likes” on and since I feel like I have NO sense of fashion, I’m going with “Fashion,” as you always pump up my confidence so much…Oh and without Pinterest, I would NEVER post a photo of my outfit to the internet! 😉

Here it goes…(I know, I know, I’m long winded – I will keep it short):

This past Sunday, what was typically a trap in the past – the weather is turning and I’m shopping in a clothing store – quickly became a revelation that I, in fact, DID have something to wear!

About twice a year, typically right when the weather is changing, I look to my closet FULL of clothes and think those annoying thoughts – “I have NOTHING to wear.” This winter Pinterest gave me a new outlook on my closet. Knowing my 100th post was on its way, I challenged myself NOT to plan out my outfits the night before this week and to use Pinterest as my Stylist each morning…and you know what, it worked! I even got a few compliments along the way!!! (NOTE DAY 4: I was running late and only after putting on my JCREW High Heel Jeans and black boots, I realized my white collared shirt was NOT ironed…BUT panic did not settle in. I grabbed a favorite sweater from LOFT 2011 and was very pleased with the outfit – I even stayed in it for Harper’s Birthday dinner. A last minute outfit NEVER makes it an entire day for me):

Takeaway?! Don’t wait until the morning to plan your outfits, BUT always use Pinterest, especially if “you don’t have anything to wear!”

TGIF, Karen

Secret Boards Makes Holiday Gifting Even Easier…

Well, at least for me it does!

My sister emailed me today, “FINALLY” Pinterest has announced “secret boards.” You would think we have been waiting for secret boards for AGES…BUT Pinterest has become such a normal part of our daily lives that, well, it feels that way! I am excited about this for SO many reasons, but my number one reason is for holiday shopping – for both myself AND for others. WHY?!

FIRST – I have QUITE a few gift ideas that I am contemplating for people on my shopping list SO I want a place to save links to these ideas. However, MANY of the people on my shopping list follow me on Pinterest. Well, that and, what if someone bought my gift idea for said gift recipient?! ENTER SECRET BOARDS!

SECOND – I am making my wishlist and I am on the hunt for new nude and black flats. I have pinned a ton of options so I can point them out to the sales person when I get to the store. I don’t know which ones will ultimately make my wish list until I try them on. However, MANY of the products I had pinned to my “Wish List” board around my 30th were generously gifted to me for my birthday – what does that tell me!? I have quite a few loved ones actually using my Pinterest boards as a resource for what to buy me. (NOTE: I realize this is not a “GOD FORBID” moment or anything. BUT, I don’t want people to be misinformed by my “Wish List” board!) ENTER SECRET BOARDS to store the shoes I want to remember to check out!

Anyhoo, I can think of a million ways to use this board – secret bachelorette/baby-wedding shower/surprise/etc. party planning, baby name gift ideas or baby room decorating (if you aren’t sharing the sex of your baby or name of your baby), REALLY, ANYTHING! Secret boards really would have come in handy back when Mr. Darcy’s cousin asked me if I was pregnant because I was pinning so many baby related things! For the record, I was pinning them to my “String around my finger” board…FOR THE FUTURE PEOPLE!

YAY, SECRET BOARDS! Happy “secretly” Pinning!

XOXO, Karen

UPDATE: Pinterest is gradually rolling out secret boards throughout the day! SO, if you don’t have access via the web you can access secret boards now on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device – make sure to upgrade to the latest version!

P.S. I have not been able to get this song out of my head since my sister emailed me…ENJOY!

Nom, Nom, Nom – World Series Approved Menu: Mozzarella Sticks & More

I can’t contain my excitement – THE GIANTS ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!!!

Bring on the game day get-togethers, creative orange attire and random shouts of “GO GIANTS” from passersby on the streets! Tonight Elizabeth is coming over to watch the game and I want to make an ALL AMERICAN dinner (or one that makes us feel like we are at the park) in honor of our boys going to the World Series!

DILEMMA!!! With the Holidays approaching (including one that lists CANDY as the number one food group), I want to be more aware of my growing front hump (HAPPY HUMP DAY BTW). However, the Giants playing so well is deserving of a FUN meal. SO, tonight’s menu is as follows:

  • Mozzerella Sticks!
  • Corn on the Cob
  • Pizza
  • COOKIES!!!

OK, ok, you might be wondering – HOW is THAT menu going to help with the front hump?! Well, thanks to Pinterest I’m going to make the following tweaks to the menu:

  • Mozzarella Sticks* – I found an AMAZINGLY easy recipe that tells you to “Cut up string cheese, dip in skim milk, then Italian bread crumbs. Bake at 425 for 7-10 minutes.” I’ll use Trader Joe’s Reduced Fat string cheese and keep the skim milk, for a protein filled appetizer!
  • Pizza – Oh yeah, you know it, I’m going to make Mr. Darcy’s fave Zucchini Pizzas from instead! Add a little sausage and nom, nom, nom:
  • Corn on the cob – SO, we have leftover corn on the cob, so I went to Pinterest to see what I could do and THIS amazing recipe makes, what looks like, a DELICIOUS corn salad with avocados and tomatoes – two of my fave things! DEFINITELY making this one tonight:
  • Cookies – Well, cookies just shouldn’t be messed with. I know there are healthier desserts out there, BUT my mom made a TON of cookies for my 30th Fiesta and they are delicious. SO, we are going to splurge on dessert!!! Besides, that light stuff is NEVER filling. Go with a little fat and fill up faster!

Nom, Nom, Nom:

XO, Karen

*I starred the Mozzarella Ball recipe because this pin was mispinned on PINTEREST. Please be sure to pin correctly so we can all enjoy the link back to recipes! That pinner put the recipe in the description, but that is cheating the original chef out of a link back – unless that pinner was the chef. Either way, I wanted to write a quick note about that.

The Pinterest Woman’s TOP 25 GIRLS NIGHT MOVIES

I am SOOO looking forward to this weekend. Charlotte and I are heading to Los Angeles to have a girls weekend with my sister (there will be one little man in attendance as well, but he is SO cute that we don’t mind the testosterone). The plan is to lounge around and get some good ladies time in. Part of that plan is watching GIRLIE MOVIES. NOW, I take my movie watching VERY seriously. So, when I was self-tasked with going through my collection to bring my fave movies to LA I was inspired to write a little post about my TOP GIRLS NIGHT MOVIES. I should note here, that movies I deem “Girlie” are ones I know Mr. Darcy will not enjoy with me. SOO, really, there are a TON of ROMCOMS on this list.

BTW, I went to PINTEREST to make sure I wasn’t missing anything and smiled when my favorite movie came up first when I typed in “ROMCOM.” It also showed me that I was going to have to break this list up. SO, my first list is basically my all time faves, then I go into tear jerker movies, then “sexy” girlie movies – because really, Girls Nights usually happen for MANY reasons.

I’m sure this will not come as a surprise when I say there were quite a few connecting factors in my movie selections:

  • The majority are VERY cheesy. BUT “CHEESY” does NOT a girlie movie make! It must be cheesy in its celebration of women (aka GIRL POWER) and/or love story aspects.
  • Many also have some tear jerker element, but usually due to love or gaining girl power (and sometimes even PARENTING)
  • ALL of them have a hot man or swoon worthy male character
  • Lastly (I even laughed when I recognized this), many of my favorites have a scene where the lead characters break into song…yep, I know.

SOO, while this was VERY difficult and I’m still wavering on a few, HERE IT GOES:

ThePinterestWoman’s Top Girls Night (Mixed with RomCom) Movies –

15. Dirty Dancing (DD)- This one was very hard to pick because there are QUITE a few AMAZING Girls Night movies out there, but what is a girls night movie list WITHOUT this oldie but goodie? A conservative girl, keeping a secret from her strict parents. A hidden talent and bad boy who brings it out in her…a FULL ON DANCE to close out the movie!? Yep, DD definitely made the list and the only reason it is so far down on the list is because it has been seen A LOT. Some girls might not want to watch it again. SO, my number 15 is DD BUT the runners up include: One Fine Day, The Cutting Edge, Sabrina, Down with Love (this is a weird one, I know, but there is something about it that I simply love – maybe the singing montages?!), Sweet Home Alabama, 50 1st Dates, and How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days …Oh gosh, I’m still going back and forth.

14. Ever After – This one was tough because it was between Drew’s “Ever After”, “Never Been Kissed,” and “Music and Lyrics.” I ultimately picked EVER AFTER because I do love fantasy as well as the INCREDIBLE costumes in this one. I LOVE her “Cinderella” costume and mask. This one is so far down on the list because I actually forgot about it until I searched “ROMCOM” on PINTEREST. When it popped up, I instantly thought “OH I MUST WATCH THIS AGAIN SOON!” I have also deemed MANY Hugh Grant movies as must-sees and while I love “Music and Lyrics” it isn’t my favorite of his.

I wonder if I could pull this off for Halloween?!

13. 10 Things I Hate About You – If putting a period (.) at the end of that title made a bigger statement visually, that is what I would have done. Seriously, hottie Heath Ledger…portrayed as a bad boy…who then tries to win over Julia Stiles with a song and dance and other swoon-worthy love professions…Need I say more?!

12. Can’t Buy Me Love – OH COME ON, it is a must. If only for the final scene, where your heart is guaranteed to swell and make you so happy you want to cry. I wonder if they ever come back and actually cut the lawn in the end?

11. Going the Distance – OK, this movie is super cheesy, but quite entertaining. If anything, watch it for Justin Long’s roommate (the guy from “Always Sunny In Philadelphia) – HILARIOUS. I actually didn’t realize how much I liked Drew Barrymore’s movies until I did this list. Apparently she has some of my fave romcoms to choose from.

10. GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN – The title alone SCREAMS girls night! It is also just a great one. The soundtrack, the dancing, the love story. YEP, #10!

9. Simply Irresistible – Ok so this movie is really under the radar – you may be thinking “there is a reason for that.” BUT, I honestly feel like it is a great, feel good movie, that makes you cry, laugh and smile. There is something so comforting and relaxing about the cooking scenes in this movie. I don’t know how to describe that or why it is, but they just are. Plus, who doesn’t love some Sean Patrick Flanery?! I could pass on Sarah Michelle Gellar, but she is good in this. WARNING: there is magic involved in this movie and a living crab with powers…it is weird, but JUST TRY IT! As the tagline on the box says, it is “A Bewitching Romance.”

See, a crab!

8. Pretty Woman – Picking just ONE Julie Roberts (JR) movie was a tough one. SO, I’m selecting “Pretty Woman” as the best JR girlie flick, but really, you could do no wrong watching “My Best Friends Wedding,” OR “Pretty Woman”…or if you are in the mood for a girlie thriller, throw in her “Sleeping with the Enemy”

7. Troop Beverly Hills – “WHAT A THRILL!” OK, this one MAY have only made the list because Mr. Darcy absolutely would never watch this movie with me, ha! BUT it also made the list because it is sweet, hilarious and I absolutely LOVE everything about a wealthy-take-on-Girls-Scouts– fancy uniforms, awesome campouts, and over the top cookie sale fundraisers. Don’t you love the gold in Shelly Long’s cape from the movie?

SO many great scenes!

6. Sex and the City 2 – Now, I know this movie did not get the best reviews, BUT I’ve seen it a few times over and I have to say, it is entertaining! The adventures they go on and the hilarity that happens to sexually driven women in a conservative distant land are worth it for a girlie night. I’d say stick to S&TC 2 and not 1 – The first is a bit depressing if you ask me. PLUS, the ring that Mr. Big gives Carrie in the end is in-your-dreams worthy. I LOVE it because it acts as a reminder of just how important my “Girls” are to me.

5. First Wives Club – Can you say GIRL POWER!!?!?! Women finding strength, getting back at terrible men AND using the gift of SONG to celebrate their new found girl power! Plus, who doesn’t love their song and dance scene?! For more on that scene, check out the bottom of my past post.

This one was on the cusp of being my #5. BUT…

4. When Harry Met Sally – Similar to Julia, Meg Ryan has some KILLER romcoms to choose from – VERY difficult picking just one. Coming in a VERY close second to “When Harry Met Sally” is “You’ve Got Mail,” and “Sleepless In Seattle.” She gets the #4 spot because I felt she had MORE girlie movies to choose from and more ICONICALLY girlie topics covered.

3. The Holiday – Oh boy – I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this one. I absolutely love Kate Winslet (Fun –ahem, dorky – Fact: I was interviewed by FOX News back when Titanic came out because I had seen it SO many times – when they interviewed me, I was up to 11 times…DORK!) Try NOT to fall in love with Jude Law when he cries…OH MY GOODNESS. I am going to have to start my top Holiday movies sooner rather than later, that will be a tough one for me ;-).

2. Bridget Jones Diary – At some point in a girl’s life (maybe just mine and my friends’ lives) she will feel down in the dumps and in need of a change. THIS is the ULTIMATE story of that woman, taking her from drowning her sorrows in a solo of “All By Myself”…”Don’t want to be, ALL BY MYSEELLLF” to running through the streets in her skibbys without a care in the world  – BJD is not only one of my all time favorite movies, it is my go-to Girls Night Movie! I’m bringing it to Los Angeles with me!

1. LOVE ACTUALLY – Hugh Grant is pretty good at cranking out some great romcoms. Obviously, Bridget Jones Diary is on this list, but “LOVE ACTUALLY,” OH LOVE ACTUALLY. You are heartbreaking, yet lovely, you are witty, yet dry and you are HILARIOUS throughout. I love you for making me cry, laugh, go “ahh” and “OH NO!” over the course of 136 minutes. There are SO many parts of this movie that I absolutely LOVE – the surprise band at the wedding, the heartbreaking “carolers” scene, the school recital, running through the airport….OH! I could go on and on! While this is my number one girls night movie, it is also loved by Mr. Darcy so it is in general an ALL AROUND great movie! In fact, I used many songs from this soundtrack during my own wedding!

Dear Love Actually, “To me, you are perfect.” Love always, The Pinterest Woman

Says it all…

You may call this cheating and just adding more to the list without putting a number on them, but in my defense, you really can’t suggest a tear jerker for a girls night unless the night calls for some crying. SO, for THAT type of Girls Night, here are my:

Top 6 Girls Night Tear Jerkers –

6. Hugh Grant has some good ones: “About A Boy,”  “Two Weeks Notice” A WARNING: These are somewhat depressing at times, but I had to put them on here because I simply cannot look away when I watch these.

5. August Rush – HOLEY MOLEY, have you seen this movie?! Mr. Darcy would roll his eyes if he knew this was one of my top 5 girlie tear jerkers. BUT it is GOOD…and really?! NO ONE can deny that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is HOT!

4. Life As We Know It – This could potentially be placed in the “Sexy” section, thanks to Josh Duhamel. BUT it is also a tear jerker in the beginning. Surprisingly cute flick!

3. Stepmom – MAN, when Julie Roberts cries, it gets me every time. BUT, a crying Julie AND Susan Sarandon?! GOODNIGHT!

2. The Notebook – OK, this one was a tough one. Should it just go on the top 10 Girlie Movie Night list? Or here…ultimately, I picked here because I feel like you have to be in the mood for this one.

1. Steel Magnolias – This is one of my all time favorite movies, but GOOD LORD it is a tear jerker and definitely one of those movies I have to watch alone, or with a girlfriend who is ready to pull out the box of tissues. I mean, when Sally Fields screams “I was supposed to go first,” at the cemetery – Bawling tears stream down EVERY SINGLE TIME…I usually have to cry into the next few scenes before I can compose myself. Sorry, I can’t just shake it off as quickly as Sally can when they get her laughing with a recommendation of punching Quiser. I DON’T JUST LIKE YOU, I LOVE YOU SALLY FIELDS!

OK, since I have a Tear Jerker section, I had to throw in a “SEXY” section…because what would a girls night movie round up be WITHOUT a sexy section?! The reason this gets its own section and doesn’t get looped into the above is because some people, ME INCLUDED, get a bit awkward with “Sexy” scenes when with certain people. SO, if you are not with those “certain” people, pop these suckers in and enjoy whoopin’ it up!

3. STEP UP – Channing Tatum.

2. Cruel Intentions – Ryan Phillippe

1. Magic Mike – Channing Tatum. I have not even seen this movie, BUT I am putting it on here because A. Elizabeth is hosting a “Magic Mike” party at the end of this month (My party contributions to be shared at a later date here) and B. any girls night where “watching Magic Mike” is on the list of todos is guaranteed to be a fun night. I know it got terrible reviews and was apparently much more serious than promoted, BUT if you have the right group of girls, I think those few scenes will be VERY fun to watch!

I’m intentionally leaving this at 24 movies and not 25 because I KNOW as soon as I hit “PUBLISH” I’m going to think of 24 more movies I missed…SO, a list of 24 with #25 to be left to the imagination!

My Personal Stylist Goes By The Name “Pinterest”

This afternoon I had lunch with Charlotte and she complimented me on my “Pinterest” outfits. Why am I bringing this up? Well, because I NEVER received compliments on my outfits until Pinterest. I always had dreams of going to Nordies (aka Nordstroms) and having one of their personal shoppers help me out – I used a personal shopper ONCE in college for a special dance event but it was a bad experience.*

PINTEREST has helped me avoid anything like that again and has been working out for me…and at no cost! I have been meaning to share a few slides to show my take on outfits and have FINALLY had a chance to put them all together…SO, here are a few of my favorite Pinterest inspired outfits from the last few weeks/days when I was getting ready for my Fleet Week Party, tuning into the Giants Game after work and, well, TODAY:

What do you think?!

Anyhoo, that is just a sampling, but fun all the same! Maybe I should give Pinterest a real name so when I refer to him/her as my stylist you all know who I’m talking about…hmmm…MISS P – like Miss J from “Americas Next Top Model!”

XOXO, Karen

PS. I know I’ve talked a lot about my Fiesta and have not shared much of substance yet. BUT we sent out a thank you note via my Paperless Post invitation today with a link to a Shutterfly Share site I created for photo sharing SO I hope to get photos soon!

*My personal shopping experience took place years ago at the Macy’s in San Diego. The woman brought me a shapeless white suit (like a work suit that was $500) so I walked out. But really!?! I was on a college student budget, I was going to a special dance/party and I WAS IN COLLEGE – who wears suits to stuff like that? Maybe the sexy, shaping ones, but not a boxy suit!
